For the second year in a row, the Isle of Wight has led the way in the delivery of the European funding programme, known as LEADER. Since 2008, 55 projects were approved for funding which equates to a boost of £813,245 to the Island’s rural economy, more than any other Local Action Group (LAG) in the South East.
Judi Griffin, Chairman of the Local Action Group (LAG) was delighted; “LEADER is so important to the Isle of Wight and has given invaluable support to the local rural economy and the communities within it. It’s also been refreshing to see so many businesses with such energy and enthusiasm coming forward with vibrant projects.”
She continued; “Much of this success is down to the hard work of the staff at Natural Enterprise, their development, appraisal and management of all the projects as well as the LAG members themselves and their commitment to this funding programme”.

Some of the local projects which have received funding in the past year alone include an asaparagus grader, a local produce shop within a pub, a storage barn and delivery trailer for a wood hub and a play area at Gurnard.
Graham Biss, Managing Director of Natural Enterprise added; "It has been excellent to see how projects have developed and the positive impact the LEADER funding programme is having on the rural economy and local communities.
LEADER on the Isle of Wight will only continue for a further two years, so if you are looking to improve your business or develop a new enterprise in the rural economy or as a farm diversification, LEADER could be able to support you.
