Earlier in the year the Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Southampton and Portsmouth Electric Economy Drive (HI-SPEED) consortia submitted an expression of interest to Government to install charging points for electric vehicles, as part of the ‘Plugged-In-Places’ initiative.
The consortia have now been invited to submit a full application and we are looking to assess the level of interest amongst employers, in both the private and public sector, to join this bid. If successful this initiative will help subsidise the cost of installing charging points on the Island. The bid contains a number of key themes:
1. Greening the Fleets – Offering discounted charging points to promote electric vehicles within the larger fleets on the Island, including large employers on the Island, as well as taxis, car hire and pool car companies.
2. Greening Businesses – Offering discounted charging points to a significant number of other employers for installation in their car parks (e.g. for employees and/or customers).
3. Eco-Tourism and Leisure – Installing charging points at ‘high volume’ visitor attractions, hotels and leisure/retail destinations.
If your organisation is considering installing charging points for electric vehicles and interested in joining the HI-SPEED bid then please complete the short online survey by following the link below. It should take less than 2 minutes to complete.

Information about costs
1.The cost of a public charging point for electric vehicles, including installation, is approximately £3,000 plus £2,000 installation cost. An example of a public charging point is the ‘Elektrobay’ from the firm Elektromotive, the current market leader in the UK.
The HI-SPEED consortium is currently looking at ways of reducing this price by purchasing through new procurement frameworks.
2.However for most businesses, all that is really needed is an external weather and dust proof socket (for example the MK masterseal weatherproof socket). The costs of the units are relatively modest – £16.75 plus VAT without RCD, £63.05 with RCD. The installation costs will depend on factors like the existing wiring, the location of the sockets and the existing RCD.

3.For organisations wishing to determine the total amount of electricity used and the costs then a single phase digital check meter can be installed. Separate meters can be installed if appropriate to measure the the electricity output from each charging point.

4.For all sockets and meters, firms are strongly encouraged to contact a specialist local electrician to advise on the costs and most appropriate units.
