Newport Rivers rewarded at Community Awards

30 Jun 2010

We are delighted to announce that the Newport Rivers Group has won a prize in this year’s Isle of Wight Rural Community Council’s Community Action Awards. The Group, administered by Natural Enterprise, was awarded £100 in the Environment category for its restoration work at Pan Mill Meadows, Newport.

The prize money will be donated to the Group’s partner organisation, the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust who, along with the Green Gym, have worked hard to restore and maintain this fen meadow and wet woodlands at the heart of Newport.

Natural Enterprise’s Head of Environment, Ian Boyd said “These awards highlight the important part that volunteers play in our local community – the restoration at Pan Mill Meadows is a wonderful example of how local groups can work together”.

Over 100 volunteers worked extremely hard to improve the woodland site and glade which is now home to new butterflies, birds and wildflowers. Pan Mill Meadows is now visited far more than ever before and thanks for this must also be given to the Environment Agency who have been a great help in assisting in the organisation and the funding of this and other Newport River Group Projects.
