Gurnard Play Area
This was a village renewal and development project
Background
The project was a direct result of feedback from the Gurnard Parish Plan consultation exercise. The 2 schools were also consulted which have over 300 young people attending. The scheme selected was a direct result of that consultation.
A main central multi-activity item of equipment was favoured, surrounded by 2/3 “springer” type pieces and perhaps a step ladder slide for the very young together with a couple of seats. In July 2008 the manufacturer Eibe was selected to work with on the project, and designed a scheme to include a central multi-activity boat and much more surrounding equipment than was imagined possible for the space.

About the project
LEADER has enabled this Parish Council to provide a safe and secure environment for play and to install a range of play equipment, seating and waste disposal.
As this was a community project which did not seek to charge users, Gurnard Parish Council were able to apply for up to 80% grant assistance. Prior to starting out on their consultation Carol Flux, our LEADER Development Officer was able to advise the Parish Clerk on the level and type of community involvement in the planning of the scheme that would be expected. She was also able to offer support and advice as the Parish Council applied for and obtained planning permission, and provide liaison with the other funding bodies which included the Isle of Wight Rural Community Council, Awards for All, Play Builders and Gurnard Bonfire Society.
The Playground is a great success and very busy at all times of the year. Rusty Adams, Gurnard Parish Clerk said “When the ribbon was cut all the youngsters cheered so loudly it was quite moving – it is so gratifying to have completed a scheme that was so sought after in the Village and that has been so enthusiastically received”.
