AGRICYCLE
Received funding to support the creation and development of micro businesses

Background
Agri.Cycle is a franchise recycling scheme with a processing facility based in Lincolnshire. Agri.Cycle Isle of Wight acts a transfer station for recycling all agricultural plastic waste and is based on a farm at Northwood. The only option previously available for farm plastics was landfill.

About the project
RDPE LEADER provided local farmer Sue Symes with a bailer to enable her to establish an agricultural waste recycling scheme on the Isle of Wight. Sue is able to take agricultural plastic and containers which are bailed and sent off-Island for recycling. Since establishing her project in late 2008 Sue has now expanded into the collection of shotgun cartridge cases.

Farmers sign to an agreement for a year, they can then deliver all their plastic waste which is then baled to condense the plastic into half ton bales which makes it more economical to ship to the mainland for recycling.

About LEADER Funding
RDPE LEADER funding is available to landowners and other rural based businesses for projects that can support the wider rural economy. The applications are made on a competitive process and a maximum grant available for a single project is £50,000. Aid rates vary but are in the region of 40% – 50% and only for capital purchases.

Carol Flux the LEADER Development Officer was able to help Sue through the application process.
