Food retail toolkit

The South East Food Group Partnership has launched the Retail Toolkit – a self help guide for independent retailers such as farm shops, food stores and deli’s. This is the only comprehensive support available to retail businesses in the UK.

Based on good practice, hard won practical experience and the advice of successful food retailers, the Retail Toolkit has been developed by us with help from the Guild of Fine Food. The development of it was funded by SEEDA. It is an easily accessible, straightforward business resource designed to support both new and established independent food businesses such as deli’s, farm shops or any other food stores.

Presented in a friendly, easy-to-read structured workbook format, the Toolkit offers busy retailers:

  • A useful reminder of the key business elements and activities that underpin your business and require regular review and close management to maintain and build profitability
  • An easy to follow overview of these key business activities – what you need to consider, practical activities, useful tips, plus important facts and information
  • Encouragement to introduce and maintain regular checks and systems that will help you continually review and evaluate your business and help it run more smoothly

The Retail Toolkit looks at the average food business across the following key areas: Premises, Business Basics, Business Development, Marketing, Financial.

Working in the local food sector the SE Food Group thought it was necessary to develop a toolkit that helps busy retailers improve their shop. You can easily dip in and out as and when you want to, rather than having to read a book from a-z or buy in retail consultants. Local farm shops and deli’s sell a lot of local produce and are important providers of fresh, high quality food and the better they fare, the better it is for the community of local producers and consumers.

The guide is currently free of charge to retailers that belong to the county food group in their area, others pay £49.99. The guide is also suitable for start up businesses.

More information about the Retail Toolkit can be found on at Retail Toolkit or you can email Sally Edwards directly.
