A Coastal Community Team is a local partnership consisting of the local authority and a range of people and business interests from a coastal community who have an understanding of the issues facing that area and can develop an effective forward strategy for that place. The Teams include a range of local stakeholders and have broad support. Coastal Community Teams choose their own priorities.
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) have awarded a grant to the Isle of Wight to establish a Coastal Community Team for the Medina Valley, stretching from the beaches of Cowes and East Cowes to the quay and town centre in Newport. As its focus the Medina Valley Coastal Community will focus on ways to improve and enhance the visitor economy of the area and will be producing an economic plan by end of March 2017.
The Coastal Community Team has representatives from Natural Enterprise, IW Chamber of Commerce, Quay Arts, Medina Valley Centre, IW College, IW Estuaries Partnership, Visit Isle of Wight and the Isle of Wight Council. Natural Enterprise are the host organisation and are coordinating the development of the plan.
Following an initial consultation with local residents, businesses and organisations the Team have now produced a draft report and action plan for their delivery. It does not guarantee access to additional money, but it will assist funding applications. The report will be a live document, so although it will be submitted to DCLG at the end of March, it will be updated as necessary.
